Valedictorian Brandy Clark’s off to college and although she’s a know-it-all about nearly everything in her life, she’s hopelessly lost when it comes to sex. When hunky, guitar-wielding Rusty Waters mistakes Brandy for another girl at a party and drunkenly makes out with her, she fumbles and realizes just how little she knows. So, what does any straight-A, type-A person do? Solve the problem. Brandy starts by compiling a list of everything sexual she needs experience with, finding whomever she can to complete each item with, till she reaches “full intercourse” with Rusty Waters – the obvious end goal. Oh, and did I mention this is all set in 1993?
In case you were couldn’t figure it out by the film’s premise, yes, of course this movie is rated R. This is not a movie for the easily blushing. Although it may be raunchy, it’s refreshingly so. It’s not filled with your usual base sex gags that accompany most raunchy comedies, but it’s actually a rather honest look at first sexual experiences. It’s not just hilarious because of the dialogue and situational comedy, but it’s also incredibly relatable to anyone who remembers their first time doing anything sexual. And major kudos to Aubrey Plaza for going all the way in this movie. She quite literally does anything this script throws at her, all with her classic deadpan charm. And the supporting roles are all simply brilliant.
This film, starring a female protagonist, isn’t about romance; it’s about sex. And that alone makes it a wonderfully fresh story. Yes, it’s explicit. So don’t go see this if sex makes you uncomfortable. No, I take that back. You probably SHOULD see if that’s the case. Our heroine awkwardly approaches her pursuit of knowledge and experience with such genuine spirit, it’s endearing. She even concludes at the end that sex IS a big deal, and yet it’s also NOT a big deal. You’ll be rooting for her and laughing at the hilarity of it all.
